Time is running out to save Southall Crown Post Office, which is due to close on 5th March 2024.
Last night, councillors from Ealing Labour passed a motion at Ealing Council’s Full Council meeting, demanding that post office management immediately halt the proposed closure of Southall Crown Post Office.
Southall Crown Post Office is a vital community asset and a key part of Southall Broadway. It is essential to the community and many will struggle to access services like banking facilities without a local post office branch.
Working alongside the MP for Ealing Southall, Virendra Sharma MP, and members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), Ealing Labour are doing all we can to stop this from happening:
- A unanimous motion proposed by Ealing Labour was passed at our Full Council meeting, opposing the closure and inviting senior Post Office officials to come and justify their decision to local councillors at an Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting.
- Councillor Louise Brett, Cabinet Member for Decent Living Incomes and Councillor Peter Mason, Leader of Ealing Council, have written to Kevin Hollinrake, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Enterprise, Markets and Small Business, to ask him to lobby senior officials from the post office and ask them to reverse their decision.
- We’ve arranged Save our Crown Post Office rallies in Southall along Virendra Sharma MP and members of the CWU.
- Bassam Mahfouz, Labour’s GLA Candidate for Ealing and Hillingdon, and Virendra Sharma MP addressed the Save Southall Post Office rallies.
The hard work doesn’t stop there, and we will fight to keep the Post Office open until the very last moment.
Peter Mason, Leader of Ealing Council and ward councillor for Southall Green, said, “Southall Crown Post Office is a crucial lifeline for our residents and people in Southall have been clear – it must not close. Southall has a strong and thriving small business community, but the closure of the Southall Crown Post Office will have a huge impact that will be felt across the high street. Ealing Labour will fight to keep the Post Office open, but the Government must work with Post Office management to save this vital community asset”.
Councillor Louise Brett, Cabinet Member for Decent Living Incomes, said, “Southall Crown Post Office is essential to people and business across Southall. Post offices generate over £3 billion a year of spending in nearby shops and businesses and their closures over the last few years have been a huge blow to our high streets. I am deeply concerned about the impact that the proposed closure of the Post Office will have on Southall, and I urge the Post Office to work with us to save it”.
Bassam Mahfouz, Labour Assembly candidate for Ealing and Hillingdon, said, “Southall Crown Post Office is more than just a post office, it’s the beating heart of Southall Broadway – a lifeline for older people and small businesses. 87% if people agree that the Post Office is an essential service for vulnerable and lonely people, whilst 43% of small businesses say they would not be able to continue functioning without the Post Office. The Government must step in to save it.”
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan added, “These closures are not inevitable, they are a political choice by a Tory Government which has overseen years of austerity and neglect of our high streets. The Government must step in to prevent the closure of the Post Offices in Southall and Clapham.
“Post Offices and their dedicated staff provide a vital service to their communities and I’m proud to support the CWU’s campaign.”
